Cambridge book sale benefits community programming

Programming

The sale continues until Dec. 23 with the proceeds supporting 50+ programming in the city

The City of Cambridge is running a book, puzzle and card sale until Dec. 23 in support of community programming.

The sale is taking place at the Allan Reuter Centre, David Durward Center and the Ted Wake Centre.

The idea, which is in its first year, joins a list of other past events run by the city such as strawberry socials, fashion shows, wine tasting events, musical performances and in-season gatherings.

“The idea was driven by our boards who are made up of volunteers who work to produce community focused programs and services to provide enjoyment and encourage the concept of overall wellness,” Nicole Cichello, supervisor of recreation and older adult services for the City of Cambridge said.

“The primary goal of the event is simply to recycle used books and puzzles for those who enjoy reading and make good puzzles.”

Residents are asked to only give what they can, if they can. Any money raised will remain within the respective 50+ community centers for which the dollars were collected.

“The dollars raised at special events go back to the operating boards who decide on behalf of the membership where the dollars are to be spent,” Cichello said.

“Over the years the boards have contributed in a number of different ways, including but not limited to, renovating a room, purchasing new or replacing old equipment or offering special events at a low or no charge price. It’s up to the operating boards themselves to decide how money is spent and reinvested.”

Funding for the programs is critical in helping ensure older residents stay connected in the community.

“Seniors active living centers offer social, cultural, learning and recreational programs for older adults and people with disabilities that promote health, well-being and social connections.” Cichello said

Types of programs that will be supported by the funds include arts and culture, book clubs, fitness centers and classes, health and well-being services, lifelong learning classes, recreation and leisure activities, special events, travel, canoeing and woodworking.
